THE IDEAL PATHWAY

The International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) gives students a chance to specialise early, gaining clarity, confidence, and the study and exam skills that ensure they thrive in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP), the BIS Hanoi Diploma, and at leading universities worldwide.
Why IGCSE to IB?
Unlike inquiry-only programmes, the IGCSE offers greater depth, structure, and exam experience; the perfect preparation for the rigour of the IBDP. It allows students to specialise early, uncovering their strengths and passions before making key IB subject choices. This gives them a valuable opportunity for exploration and self-discovery, a chance to experiment, refine their interests, and build the confidence to forge their own pathway toward future success. As a globally recognised qualification, the IGCSE also strengthens future university applications, giving students an early record of achievement that sets them apart.

IGCSE
The IGCSEs allow your child to personalise their learning journey. Alongside core subjects such as English, Mathematics, Science, and a first language, students select additional subjects that reflect their interests and ambitions. They also continue to develop essential skills through P.E., wellbeing, global citizenship, and ways of learning. Culminating in the IGCSE exams at the end of Year 11, this internationally respected qualification provides an excellent foundation for success in the IBDP and beyond.

The BIS Hanoi Diploma offers greater flexibility, allowing your child to select individual IB courses. Both pathways prepare students for success at universities across the globe.

CAMBRIDGE IGCSE

From self-regulation to e-commerce marketing, trigonometry to choreography, and global sustainability to robotics and AI, our students explore a world of knowledge while developing the practical skills to thrive as future-ready learners.
The International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) is the only globally recognised qualification at age 14 that gives students the freedom to choose what they study. This early opportunity to specialise allows them to shape their own academic story, selecting subjects that reflect their interests, strengths, and ambitions. With every choice, they grow in confidence, curiosity, and ownership of their learning.
Alongside strong core studies, students gain the structure, discipline, and exam skills that prepare them for the rigour of the IB Diploma Programme. More importantly, they discover what drives them and emerge confident in who they are and where they’re headed.

IBDP & BIS HANOI DIPLOMA (AGE 16 - 18)

At the British International School Hanoi, Sixth Form students can choose between the rigorous International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) or the more flexible BIS Hanoi Diploma. Students taking the full IBDP choose six subjects across six subject groups, alongside the three core components:

  • Creativity, Activity & Service (CAS): Students engage in meaningful projects such as charity fundraisers, learning a musical instrument, coaching younger students, or environmental initiatives.
  • Theory of Knowledge (TOK): Students develop critical thinking, consider issues from multiple perspectives, and make reasoned, ethical judgments, essential skills for life and university.
  • Extended Essay (EE): A research project in a chosen subject that builds research, writing, and analytical skills, preparing students for higher education.

The BIS Hanoi Diploma provides a flexible pathway allowing students to take a minimum of four IB courses alongside the CAS programme, with the option to complete the Extended Essay in a subject of their choice.

Both pathways are internationally recognised, with graduates often progressing to top universities worldwide.
