Skills AI Can’t Match: How we prepare your child for the future at the British International School Hanoi

Skills AI Can’t Match: How we prepare your child for the future at the British International School Hanoi - Skills AI cant match

In a world full of AI answers, will your child learn how to think?

Artificial intelligence is already transforming how we learn, work, and solve problems. Answers are faster, easier, and everywhere.

But when answers are instant, something else matters more than ever: your child’s ability to think independently, question thoughtfully, and adapt with confidence.

The future isn’t just about what children know. It’s about how they think.

Today, children in Hanoi are growing up in a world where the question is no longer, “can students find the right answer?”. It’s: “can they understand it, challenge it, and use it wisely?”

At BIS Hanoi, we focus on developing these essential thinking skills every day.  At the British International School Hanoi, we combine a rigorous British curriculum with personalised support so every student can thrive. From the Early Years through Primary to IGCSE and the IB Diploma Programme, we deliberately nurture our students to become responsible global citizens, grounded in strong values and a deep understanding of their role in an interconnected world.

As learning builds over time, students also develop as responsible digital citizens, using technology ethically and thoughtfully. In an era where AI delivers instant answers, our focus is on developing young people who think critically, question thoughtfully, and apply their learning with confidence and integrity.

Through expert teaching and internationally recognised pathways such as IGCSE and the IB Diploma, we prepare students not only for leading universities, but for a future where independent thinking, adaptability, and responsible global leadership set them apart.   - Rebecca Carroll, Principal, BIS Hanoi

How we develop thinking skills at BIS Hanoi

We don’t just teach answers. We teach students how to think.

In our classrooms, students learn to:

  • Reflect before responding
  • Explore different perspectives
  • Explain and justify their thinking
  • Solve problems independently

The whole approach to teaching the Primary Curriculum at BIS Hanoi allows students to learn, develop, practise and strengthen skills such as data analysis, develop critical thinking and challenge preconceived ideas.  For example, during our last STEAM week, students from Y1 to 6 investigated global environmental challenges such as climate change by analysing real data, forming hypotheses, and presenting evidence-based conclusions. Rather than simply learning facts, they were guided to question sources, compare perspectives and justify their reasoning -building the analytical skills that underpin success in IGCSE and beyond.

In Secondary lessons and CCAs, students debate global issues, analyze contrasting viewpoints and construct well-supported arguments - these aren't just key skills for success in IGCSE and IB Diploma examinations, but also life beyond school and university. Our teachers challenge students to evaluate evidence critically, question assumptions, and defend their ideas with clarity and confidence.

Our approach builds curiosity, confidence, and independence in every learner.

Backed by global research

As part of Nord Anglia Education, our school’s approach to learning is informed by a global research partnership with Boston College, involving over 12,000 students worldwide.

The results showed measurable improvements in the skills that matter most:

  • +20% curiosity
  • +21% critical thinking
  • +15% collaboration, commitment and compassion
  • 76% of students reported increased independence

This research helps us continuously improve how we teach and how students learn.

As part of Nord Anglia Education, we benefit from these global insights, using research-informed approaches to continuously strengthen teaching and learning across the school.

This supports our focus on personalised learning and preparing students for an AI-powered future.

Confidence in an uncertain world

When children learn how to think, they gain the confidence to:

  • Solve problems independently
  • Adapt when things change
  • Keep going when challenges arise
  • Make decisions with confidence

These are the skills that prepare them not just for exams, but for life.
